Does laser eye surgery hurt?

We answer one of the most commonly asked questions about laser eye surgery.

For patients considering laser eye surgery, the idea of having crystal clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses is a huge positive. However, for some, the mere thought of a laser interacting with your eye raises questions about pain. Here’s why you need not worry.

Let’s quell a few concerns from the outset: Laser surgery is a painless procedure for the vast majority of patients, with most feeling just a sensation of mild pressure during the surgery. For some, there can be a sense of discomfort afterwards, which can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Many patients see a significant improvement in their vision within 24-48 hours following surgery.

What medications are given before laser surgery begins?

Before surgery, patients are given local anaesthetic drops to numb the eye, as well as the option of a mild sedative that can help make the procedure more relaxing. No needles are required at any stage of the procedure.

The surgery is usually very quick, typically taking about 15 to 20 minutes for each eye. However, the actual laser treatment only lasts a few seconds, depending on the type of procedure you are undergoing: LASIK, SMILE Pro or PRK.

Have a look at our treatment options for a rundown on these three options and to see a close up animation of each process.

How will my eyes feel after laser eye surgery?

Some patients experience a sense of irritation and/or mild pain for a few hours post-surgery. Paracetamol and ibuprofen are typically all that is needed to manage this. Laser eye surgery is an excellent excuse to take it easy for the rest of the day. Light activities can be resumed the day following surgery.

What does the surgery feel like?

Most patients are surprised to feel little in the way of sensations during the surgery, besides some mild pressure. Some do report a burning smell during PRK and LASIK eye surgery, this smell is caused by the release of carbon atoms into the air. But don’t worry, it is completely normal and expected, not a cause of concern. In fact, while people often think of lasers as hot, the lasers we use in eye surgery procedures are not.
