What is involved in your role at SES Laser?
As a refractive orthoptist, I am involved with patient education, measurements, testing and diagnostic scanning. I also assist the eye surgeon in theatre and in post operative eye care and examinations. Much of my work involves preparing patients for the treatment options that will be most suitable to help them achieve their goal of spectacle freedom.
What brought you to this area of eye care?
Being able to see clearly without relying on glasses and contact lenses really is life changing. For example, not everyone can go for a dip in the sea in the summertime without the fear of losing a contact lens and being unable to see your way out of the water. I love helping patients gain back this freedom, and I’m so pleased to be able to achieve it at SES, alongside a team of amazing colleagues.
What’s one question you often get asked about your work? What’s your answer?
“What is an orthoptist?” I get it all the time. We’re not optometrists or ophthalmologists but we work alongside them. We are eye therapists who specialise in the movement of the eye and how the eyes work together. Here at Southern Eye Specialists Laser, I assist the eye surgeons with the measurement, diagnosis, and treatment of patients. In general, you might see an orthoptist to manage strabismus (cross eyed/squint), amblyopia (lazy eye) and eye movement problems.
How has the laser eye surgery field advanced in recent years?
Treatments have become faster, safer, and less invasive than ever. SMILEpro is a key example of advanced technology taking us into the future – and it’s available now!
What’s one thing you’d like all New Zealanders to know about eye health?
All forms of prescription glasses can now be treated using refractive surgery. It doesn’t matter if you’re short sighted, far sighted or have astigmatism – we can help. It’s also important to know that New Zealand is facing a shortage of eye doctors, with many doctors looking to retire in the next ten years. This is a particular problem with our ageing population. For this reason, it’s imperative to stay proactive about your eye health and go in for regular check-ups to avoid any long term issues with your vision.
What’s your favourite thing to focus your eyes on?
I love watching rainbow trout feeding in New Zealand’s high-country streams, surrounded by soaring mountains. Just beautiful!
