Victor Ramirez joins the Southern Eye Specialists Laser team in an essential coordinating role.
Armed with a degree in Medical Technology specialising in Ophthalmology from his home country of Chile, Victor brings knowledge and passion for eye care to his day-to-day work. His clinical and operational skills ensure our laser refractive service operates smoothly, providing patients with seamless care throughout their journey at SES Laser.
What brought you to this particular area of eye care?
After finishing my degree at the University of Concepción in 2011, I had the chance to explore different areas of eye care. But it was laser refractive surgery that really sparked my passion. It’s incredibly exciting to see how cutting-edge technology can correct vision in ways that once seemed like science fiction. Helping people regain clear vision and improve their quality of life is truly fulfilling.
What have been the biggest changes in the field since you started?
The advancements in accuracy and precision have been remarkable. Back in 2010-2011, only a few people had access to a femtosecond laser for creating a corneal flap, which used to take between 20-30 seconds.
Today this technology enables us to create corneal flaps quicker than ever, completing the process in just 6 seconds. Additionally, we now offer SMILE Pro procedure (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction), which uses the same technology to create a small lenticule in the cornea in only 7 seconds. The surgeon can then carefully remove this lenticule to reshape the cornea.
At Southern Eye Specialists, we are fortunate to have the latest femtosecond laser VISUMAX 800.
Where do you see interesting advancements coming in laser surgery?
The evolution of refractive surgery over the past few decades has been incredible, and the future is looking even brighter. For example, I’m hopeful that hyperopic patients (those with longsightedness) will benefit from SMILE Pro procedures very soon.
I also see AI providing better tools to help design more customized treatments, making the process streamlined and efficient. It’s amazing how technology is constantly evolving to offer better, more tailored solutions for patients.
